The Ryukin Goldfish was developed
in Japan and looks similar to the Fantail Goldfish,
except for the hump back that begins right behind
the head. A high hump is considered very desirable.
The body of the Ryukin Goldfish is extraordinarily
deep; almost as deep as the body is long, and the
high dorsal fin make the fish look even higher.
The Ryukin Goldfish was originally red, but can
today be found in a large variety of colours, including
pure white, blue, calico, green/greenish, chocolate
and red and white combinations. A calico coloured
Ryukin Goldfish usually have much smaller hump.
All Ryukin Goldfish have two anal
fins, two ventral fins and two pectoral fins and
they should be evenly
paired. The caudal fin can be longfinned, ribbon,
short tailed or butterfly.
You need to follow a few rules to keep your Ryukin
Goldfish happy, such as giving it enough space,
but apart from that the Ryukin Goldfish is not
very tricky to keep. It is an active fish and can
be housed with many other types of goldfish. Avoid
keeping it with weaker variants, such as Telescope
Goldfish and Bubble Eye Goldfish, since they will
probably be bullied by the stronger Ryukin Goldfish.
Lionhead Goldfish, Oranda Goldfish and Ranchu Goldfish
are more suitable companions since they are sturdier.
